About The Instructor
“I have held a life-long love of martial arts, with early influences from movies such as The Last Dragon, Fists of Fury, and Bloodsport. My own martial arts journey began in high school with the sport of boxing, before moving on to kickboxing and mixed martial arts. I also took time to test myself in both competition arenas along the way.
In 2011, as a way to further my knowledge of grappling for mma, I began to put focus on traditional brazilian jiu jitsu and fell in love with not only the technique and community, but complexity of the art. Thus, I made it my sole martial arts focus from that point on attaining the rank of Black Belt in November 2023 under Professor Christian “Xaropinho” Uflacker. Like most students I have also competed, placed, and won multiple local competitions over my jiu jitsu journey, however, I find the true benefits of jiu jitsu extend far beyond the competition mats and as such, I strive to help my students become better in all areas of life.”
“I am truly just a product of the great instruction and training partners I have had on this path, and I hope to share what I can with others.”

Common Questions

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a form of martial arts that focuses on grappling and ground fighting. Beginning in Japan, jiu jitsu techniques involve using an attacker’s momentum against them and using leverage and proper technique to subdue or control an opponent. Ultimately, the goal is to stop a threat with minimal effort and damage.
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) provides many benefits beyond self defense skills. The training promotes fitness, in addition to, strength, flexibility, discipline and also confidence. As a result of the constant drilling and sparring you get a full body workout that burns calories and builds functional strength. Also, BJJ sharpens mental focus and teaches perseverance through challenging training.
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu can be trained by anyone regardless of age, fitness level or flexibility. Therefore, men, women, and children of all sizes and abilities practice jiu jitsu. However, each person progresses at their own pace. The techniques leverage angles, body position and also mechanics rather than sheer strength. In addition, flexibility will improve over time as you practice.
Progression through the colored belt ranks (white, blue, purple, brown, black) depends on many factors like time spent training, physical abilities, and knowledge of techniques. Most students can expect to spend at least 2 to 4 years achieving each belt promotion on average. However, there is no set timeframe, and rankings are based on skill demonstration rather than time invested.
To start training, you’ll need a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu uniform (Gi), which consists of a heavy cotton jacket and pants. Also, you may want to invest in a mouthguard to protect your teeth or braces. As you advance, you may choose to add in things like rash guards, knee pads, and a grappling dummy for solo drilling. However, the gym will provide other necessary equipment to ensure your success.
